Substance Abuse
Substance Abuse – an Overview
Despite the fact that people abuse a variety of substances today such as alcohol, drugs, and tobacco for a variety of reasons, our society pays a significant price for this. Hospital emergency rooms are witness to the damage trail that is created and the toll that is paid by the individual who suffers with a substance abuse problem. There is no end to the physical damage and trauma that is created by drug addiction, but there are emotional and mental issues that need to be dealt with anytime prolonged abuse is evident.
According to the DEA, even though cocaine abuse has been declining in past years, club drugs and heroin are gaining in popularity and overdoses are becoming increasingly prevalent in these hospital emergency rooms as a result. Here are two things that you need to be aware of where substance abuse is concerned:
There are too many choices
It has been extremely difficult to find a drug rehab center where effective treatment and the prevention of future abuse and addiction result. The problem with most of the substance abuse facilities today is that they do not treat the emotional and mental damage that results. Nor do they instruct the client in the proper ways of maintaining their new, substance-free lifestyle so that they do not succumb to an addiction in the future.
Another negative is the fact that the majority of these drug addiction treatment and recovery facilities are still using traditional methods and therapies to cure the client. When you combine that with the fact that there are literally hundreds of drug and alcohol rehab centers, choosing the right facility becomes exceeding difficult, if not frustrating. So it is imperative that you make the right decision the first time.
According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse from over 10 years ago, the estimate of the number of people who used illegal substances was over 13 million people here in the US. Additionally, over 10% of the US populace is addicted to or dependent upon alcohol, and 25% smoke cigarettes. Today, according to NIDA, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, those numbers have nearly doubled. Plus, there has also been the advent of illegally trafficked prescription medications and the distribution of club drugs as well. As you can see substance abuse is on the rise and a solution to this is treatment.
